The impact on Families and Communities left behind in South Australia
To this day, the men who served in the First World War are not forgotten. There is Remembrance Day on 11 November, which marks the ending of the war. There is a one minute silence to respect all the men who fought and lost their lives. At the Australian War Memorial there is a ceremony held, the public are welcome. The movie, Gallipoli, filmed in 1981, assists Australians to reflect on what Gallipoli was like. The poem, In Flanders Fields was written during the war but is very well-known today. It was written by doctor John McCrae, when his friend died. Moira Michael replied to his poem through one of her own, We Shall Keep the Faith. Poppy’s are mentioned in McCrae’s poem, and symbolize respect for the dead and that they will not be forgotten. In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow |
