The ANZAC spirit
The Gallipoli campaign gave the ANZACs a chance to show off their attributes and to make Australia known in the world. The Gallipoli campaign might be considered a great failure because many men lost their lives to a mission that wasn’t even achieved. Through horrific events, the ANZACs never lost determination and this is known as the ANZAC Spirit. The ANZACs were also given the name ‘digger’, a stereotype of a patriotic Australian family man who has temporarily become a soldier and has spent his civilian life in a rural area (awm.gov, The Anzac Legend). Diggers had a particular personality which embodied the ANZAC spirit. Qualities that the diggers often had were; the ability to remain positive in difficult times, to be resourceful and make their own supplies, mateship in which they had one another’s back, courage and bravery, and the respect that they showed for everyone.
Throughout the Gallipoli campaign, the ANZACs never gave up hope and persevered until they arrived safely back home. The series of failures such as the landing at Anzac Cove and The Battle of The Nek never fazed them. At the Landing, the ANZACs were confused and were easy targets for the enemy, but obeyed orders. Lieutenant Eric Talbot Smith remained positive for his men and shouted, “Come on, boys, they can't hit you” (The Australian). The ANZACs’ courage at The Battle of The Nek allowed them to continue to charge their enemy, still knowing it was futile. The ANZAC spirit was truly shown by the soldiers when they were able to evacuate but were miserable that they had to leave their fallen comrades behind.
